Rust Inhibitor Primer is a water-based primer for metal, Colorbond, and Klip-Lok roofs. It neutralises rust, prevents surface corrosion, and prepares surfaces for Roof Protect Membrane. Its eco-friendly, low VOC formula ensures durability and professional results in harsh Australian conditions.
If you’re repainting a metal, Colorbond, or Klip-Lok roof and there’s any surface rust present, this is the first product you need, before any topcoat goes on.
Rust Inhibitor Primer works by penetrating the metal surface and chemically neutralising surface rust, stopping it from spreading under the paint film. Without it, topcoat applied over rust will begin to lift and bubble within 12–18 months as rust continues to move underneath. It’s the step most DIY roof paint jobs skip, and the reason most DIY roof paint jobs fail early.
It’s not designed to stop heavy structural rust or replace rusted sections, that requires physical rust removal first. But for roofs with surface rust, light corrosion around fasteners, or any bare metal exposed by weathering or damage, Rust Inhibitor Primer is the correct first step before applying Roof Protect Paint or any other topcoat.
With a thin, milky-clear composition, it effectively prepares surfaces for Roof Protect Membrane, enhancing the performance of the final two coats. Built-in rust-inhibiting chemicals prevent the growth of surface rust, though it is not intended to stop existing rust. Its eco-friendly, low VOC formula ensures safe application while delivering durable, professional results that withstand harsh Australian conditions.
Rust Inhibitor Primer is the right product when your roof has surface rust, light to moderate corrosion on the metal surface, around fasteners, or on exposed areas where previous paint has failed.
If your roof has heavy structural rust, large sections of corroded metal, or holes forming, primer alone won’t fix the problem. That’s when you need our metal roof rust repair service before any coating work begins.

2–4 hours before topcoat in normal conditions. Allow longer in high humidity or temperatures below 15°C.
Ask us for coverage rate based on your roof’s rust extent, spot priming vs. full roof application will differ significantly

Step 1: Surface preparation
High-pressure wash to remove all dirt, lichen, loose paint, and loose rust. Allow to dry completely, do not apply primer to a damp surface.
Step 2: Rust removal
Wire brush or grind any areas of heavy, flaking, or raised rust back to a sound surface. The primer neutralises surface rust but cannot bond to rust that is loose or lifting.
Step 3: Apply Rust Inhibitor Primer
Apply one coat using a brush, roller, or low-pressure spray to all rusted areas and any exposed bare metal. The product has a thin, milky-clear appearance, this is normal. Allow to dry fully before applying topcoat (minimum 2–4 hours, longer in humid or cold conditions).
Step 4: Apply topcoat
Apply two coats of Roof Protect Paint or 20-Year Roof Paint Protection over the primed surface using airless spray equipment for even coverage.
The warranty for products from Industrial Roof Coatings, including Roof Protect, ensures reliable performance for a specified period after application. The exact duration and terms of the warranty depend on the specific product used.
Generally, the warranty covers product defects such as premature cracking, peeling, or failure to adhere correctly to the roof surface. However, it excludes damages caused by external factors like storms, improper installation, animal or chemical damage, post-restoration construction, or neglect. Previously painted roofs are not covered, as the product adheres to existing paint rather than the roof surface itself.
To be eligible for the warranty, the product must be applied by a qualified professional following Industrial Roof Coating’s guidelines. Regular inspections and maintenance may also be required to uphold the warranty’s validity.
If an issue arises during the warranty period, we will typically provide a solution, such as repairing or replacing the product, up to its original purchase value. It is crucial to review and understand the warranty terms before purchasing to understand what is covered and excluded clearly.

Rust Inhibitor Primer is specifically formulated for metal roofing surfaces including Colorbond, Klip-Lok, corrugated iron, zincalume, and galvanised steel. It is not designed for tile roofs, for concrete or terracotta tiles, use WB Primer or Terra Primer instead.
Loose, flaking, or raised rust must be removed first, wire brush or grind back to a sound surface. The primer is designed to neutralise surface rust that remains after that preparation, not to bond over rust that is already loose or lifting. Applying primer over unstable rust will not give you a sound surface for topcoat.
Yes, once the primer is fully dry (minimum 2–4 hours), apply two coats of Roof Protect Paint or 20-Year Roof Paint Protection directly over it. Do not leave the primer exposed for extended periods before topcoating, as UV exposure can affect adhesion of the topcoat.
They’re similar but not identical. A rust converter chemically transforms rust into a stable compound. Our Rust Inhibitor Primer neutralises surface rust and contains built-in rust-inhibiting chemicals that prevent regrowth, while also acting as the adhesion primer for the topcoat system. It handles both steps in one product, which is why it’s the correct first coat in our roof painting system for metal roofs.
